Dr Emily Garman is a senior researcher in the field of public mental health at the Alan J. Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health. With a background in psychology and developmental psychopathology in the UK, Emily obtained her PhD from the University of Cape Town in 2019, which focused on perinatal depression. Emily has been involved in various research projects in the Centre, such as the Perinatal Mental Health Project, the Africa Focus on Intervention Research for Mental Health (AFFIRM), the Programme for Improving Mental Health Care (PRIME) and the CHANCES-6 project. Emily is currently scientific coordinator of the ALIVE project, which aims to develop an intervention that provides self-regulation skills and skills for academic and employment success to prevent depression and anxiety among young people living in poor urban settings. Emily’s research interests lie in the integration of mental health care into community and primary care settings for vulnerable populations in low-resourced settings, including adolescents and perinatal women
